When you can do ANYTHING, you end up doing NOTHING.

Every young creative I've encountered believes that structure is the antithesis of creativity. They condemn project pipelines, announcing that their free spirits will never be constrained by pre-production.

Then, reality hits. You miss a deadline and the client is not happy. Your invoice goes unpaid and your black hole of a hard drive swallows the portfolio piece that could have booked your next client.

I'm not just making this up, either. I'm speaking to you as a reformed idealist, someone who once decried deadlines and suffered for it.

Over time, I found out what many seasoned creative professionals already knew: structure isn't a choice — it's necessary for success.

The biggest obstacle that many artists face in the professional world is scope creep. When you have endless creative freedom, it often comes with endless work and shifting goalposts. If you don't know what you're working towards, you'll end up meandering, adding features simply because they caught your interest in the moment.

That's why my pre-production always starts at the finish line.

I usually start client calls by asking about their primary goal — if I can see the destination, then I can plan every step of the journey. This allows me to make more accurate proposals, protects my team's time, and allows us to deliver exactly what the client wants.

Now, nobody is saying that you can't change things along the way. I find that I'm often the most creative when limitations are placed on me. Even Jazz, an art form characterized by improvisation, has an underlying structure. When everyone is on the same page, it allows each team member to excel in their function.
