Keywords are King: How I've Been Driving Traffic to My Website

My website has been driving so much traffic...

...the city just put in a freaking crosswalk.

I've been working with Jaqueline Arroyo and her team at Arroyo Digital Labs to completely redesign my website. My video production company in Little Rock, Arkansas desperately needed a website makeover. It was in that awkward phase of growth where, the pieces are all there, but they weren’t quite put together correctly. Luckily, Jaqui knew exactly what I needed.

We launched it a couple weeks ago and, since then, I've been working hard on making sure everything is up to date.

I know that 131 visitors in a month isn’t breaking the internet by any means, but it’s a heckuva lot more than zero, which is what I was getting before. I’ve learned in a month’s time that it’s an active process, after all, it’s called DRIVING traffic, not RIDING traffic.

So, if you’re interested in learning what it takes to drive traffic, keep reading.

Key Takeaways

  • AI Optimization: Giving bots the ability to read your website allows for you to be ranked in searches when people ask AI about your niche

  • Blog Posts: Writing blog posts allow you to stuff your site with keywords like “video production in Little Rock, AR”

  • Cross Promotion: Creating cross promotional content allows me to turn a bunch of really professional behind the scenes clips into unhinged social media posts that entertain and drive traffic

AI Optimization

So, apparently people are using AI now?

I know, huge shocker.

It was no surprise to me that people are using AI for more and more things in their everyday life. You can only read so many AI-written client scripts or generated LinkedIn posts before realizing that a LOT of people have handed over the “thinking” task to the bots.

I was, however, surprised to see HOW people were using it. Did you know that many people are now bypassing a Google search and going straight to artificial intelligence? I had no idea.

So, the first thing to do was to capitalize on this. I didn’t know, but somewhere along the way, I’d turned “AI Optimization” off on my website. That means the bot crawler army was struck down every time they tried to see my page. Normally, I’d be okay with that because bots are not my customers but, unfortunately, the humans they service are.

So, I turned this feature on, hoping that it would help drive people to my site. However, it’s not as simple as just flipping a switch. You’ve got to give the water-guzzling GPT something to latch onto. That’s why you need to start a blog.

Blog Posts

If you’re reading this, you just proved me right. Blog posts are a great way to drive traffic to your website. As a creative professional, it gives me the chance to break down the projects I’m working on, discussing the intent, process, and even editing tricks I use in Adobe Premiere Pro.

It also lets me cram words like “Adobe Premiere Pro” into my website like a hundred million times.

This serves a dual purpose: First, it allows me to connect with clients and other people in my field, showing them just how experienced I am and how bad my writing is. Second, it allows me to rank at the top of the search engine when someone looks up “Little Rock Videographer.”

By writing and maintaining a blog, I ensure that there’s a steady stream of content on my website, keeping it from being seen as inactive.

There’s also a secret, third purpose: I just like to write. There’s nothing better than putting all your unhinged thoughts out there onto the internet. That’s what it’s really meant for, after all. Which is great, because I love making some weird, shameless cross promotional posts.

Cross Promotion

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to make a TikTok out of it, does it make a sound? No way

If a talented videographer writes a blog post about lighting setups and nobody reads it, does it even exist? No way

Let’s be honest, having and updating the website is half the battle. You’ve actually got to tell people that it exists. And, let’s be honest, the “check out my new blog” post on LinkedIn is BORING. That’s why I get a little weird with it.

Well, that and the fact that I have no choice because I am weird.

I try to create interesting openers and scroll-stopping graphics to advertise my blog. Because people want to be entertained, THEN informed. That’s why I write things like “flashed on set?” or “I want to make you feel sad” on my thumbnails, because it makes people wonder what the heck is going on over here.
